Better at Pleasure (part 2 ): Feelin' It

TO START

To practice seeing the good (more on that in a minute), encourage each group member to share something truly good they’ve seen on social media or in the news in the last week or so. No bad news allowed. If this seems too hard, just have members share something good they’ve seen/experienced today.

TO DISCUSS

We said Sunday that (in light of Psalm 16) we need to get better at two things:

1. Seeing the good

  • Are you good at seeing the good or are you quick to see the bad? Share an example.

  • Why does it matter? Is life different for people who see the good vs people who see the bad? How so?

  • Give an example of a time you were quick to see the bad and wished later that you’d been more eager to see the good.

  • What can we do practically speaking to get better at this?

2. Wanting the best

  • We said Sunday, “Part of your journey of becoming better at pleasure will be a journey of becoming better at longing.”

  • What eternal pleasures do you find yourself longing for?

  • What longings for temporary pleasures sometimes get in the way?

  • How can we cultivate our longings? What can you do, practically speaking, to create an appetite for the best pleasures?

Toward the end of the sermon Sunday, Justin talked about finding joy in hardship. Have you ever experienced enjoyment or pleasure or satisfaction in the middle of an especially trying season of life, perhaps even joy connected to the hardship? If so, share with the group.

TO READ

Re-read Ecclesiastes 9:7-9.

  • How does this passage make you feel?

  • What’s the bottom line in these three verses? What should we learn?

  • Do you have any questions after reading it? Does it challenge any of your other values or understandings?

  • What does this passage reveal to you about Who God is?

TO PRAY

We shared some big news on Sunday. How’s your group doing with it? Take some time tonight to pray for this next season at Round Rock. Consult your email from Sunday for a few specific things you might pray about together as a group.
