What Good // Michael Waldrop
TO START
As we’ll continue doing throughout this quarantine, start group tonight with a check-in. How is everybody on a scale of 1-10? What has you most frustrated or sad? What are you enjoying or celebrating?
Does anyone need help of any kind? How might you love one another specifically right now?
TO DISCUSS
Do you ever feel like people put you in a certain box? What stereotype are people most likely to apply to you? How does that make you feel?
Have you ever felt dismissed or disregarded because of where you were from, where you went to school, your race, your gender, etc.? Share the story.
As we said on Sunday, Jesus himself, son of ordinary parents from a nowhere town, experienced this kind of stereotyping and dismissal. Michael said it’s God’s habit to choose and use the “the unexpected and undervalued.”
What does that tell you about Who God is?
Does that affect the way you understand your personal “value” or potential? Why or why not?
If God works in and through the places, people, and situations we regard as insignificant, repellant, lame, ugly dangerous or boring--where might God be working right now? Where might you miss God’s presence because of your own biases and preferences? (Go ahead and be specific. Where are you unlikely to look for God?)
Have you ever been truly surprised to find God somewhere (or working through someone)? Share the story.
Where have you seen God at work in COVID 19? Are you experiencing God in unexpected ways right now?
TO READ
Read I Corinthians 1:26-31.
Who is it that God chooses?
Why does God call so many ordinary, weak, and foolish people to follow Him?
When you’re looking for people to tell about Jesus, what kinds of people are you generally looking for?
Do you ever judge a person’s potential by their intelligence, economic status, or education? What can we do to see like God sees and not give those things so much weight?
TO PRAY
Let’s pray our emotions tonight. Have group members share one or two emotions they’re feeling and why. Pray for God to help you understand, process, and manage your emotions right now.
