Poured Out (Part 6): Love Poured Out on the Feet of Jesus
TO START
Heads up Small Group Leaders (next week will be the final discussion guide before we break for the Summer). You will receive an email next week with more information as we close out the Spring and as I (Matt) step away on Sabbatical (May 20th-June 23rd).
This Sunday, we jumped into the final installment of a series called Poured Out as we lean into the ways that God is pouring out wonderful things in and through our people. And we are asking the question, how do we collectively stir up momentum in our relationship with God. Start with this prompt:
When was the last time you felt loved by God in an extravagant way (worship, prayer, etc.)?
TALK IT OUT AFTER READING GALATIANS 4:1-7
STUDY
Why is Paul using the analogy of slaves and bondage here?
What is Paul trying to communicate about Christ by describing Him as both “born of a woman” and “ born under the law”?
Paul uses the language “Abba” in talking about our relationship with God in light of Jesus. What does this reveal to you about the type of relationship God is desiring to share with his children?
PROCESS
Have you struggled in your life with a “swivel chair” relationship with God (trying to earn God’s love by keeping the rules OR losing it if you break them)? If so, why did you struggle?
Share a moment in your life where you felt like you turned your back on God or were turning your back on God but God didn’t turn his back on you.
LIVE IT OUT
PRACTICE
When you reflect on your past, were there some things that kept you in bondage from truly living into your identity as a child of God? Was it achievements, failures, status, possessions, addiction, relationships or something else?
In what area of your life right now, do you need to remember that the blood of Jesus covers it and redeems it?
PRAY
This week, we want to invite your group to do a popcorn style prayer in which each person names 1 thing they are grateful for in light of God’s willingness to adopt us as sons and daughters. And close with this, “Thank you for adopting us into the family and making us heirs. Help us to live as children of God, fully embracing the freedom and love You have provided.” Amen.
