Better At Pleasure (part 4): The Joys of Enough
TO START
Start out tonight by sharing your favorite Halloween candies. What’s the best? What’s gross. (If you’re meeting in person, you could even organize a Halloween candy potluck and let group members bring and swap their kids’ leftover Halloween loot.)
TO DISCUSS
Have you ever known someone who truly seemed to enjoy his or her life? Describe them. After everyone has shared, look for commonalities. What is it about these people that leads to so much enjoyment?
What do you want to enjoy more? Share one thing you’re realizing you’ve been taking for granted.
Why do you think we struggle with moderation? What is it that makes you want to have too much?
Have you ever seen too much pleasure make a person unhappy? Share an example that’s been instructive to you (or an example from your own life).
Is it wise to avoid pleasure altogether? What’s the danger with constant, unnecessary self-denial? What might it lead to?
TO READ
Read Proverbs 25:16.
Try to memorize it together as a group. Say it together a few times. Have members write it down on a post-it note. Offer a prize for whoever remembers it next week!
TO PRAY
Tonight, pray for our country. It’s an election week, and emotions will be running high. Pray for peace and unity!
